Mississippi Delegation Endorses Episcopal Candidate
The Mississippi Annual Conference Delegation to the General and Southeastern Jurisdictional conference unanimously endorsed Rev. Fred Britton as a candidate for the office of bishop Saturday, September 7, 2019.
Britton is currently serving as the district superintendent in the Tupelo District. He has served on numerous conference and district boards, councils and committees which include the Council on Finance and Administration and on the Tupelo District Committee on Ministry (DCOM). Prior to being appointed to the cabinet, he served as the senior pastor of Tupelo First United Methodist Church.
During this year’s annual conference, Britton was the first elected clergy delegate to the 2020 General Conference and is serving as the leader of the Mississippi Delegation. He represented the Mississippi Conference as a clergy delegate to the 2019 Special Session of General Conference, 2016 General Conference, 2016 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference and a reserve clergy delegate to the 2008 SEJ Conference. Also, he served on the 2016 SEJ Nominations Committee.
Britton has been married to his wife, Angela, for 31 years. They have one adult daughter, Rachel.
“The Mississippi Conference General and Jurisdiction delegation participated in a discernment process to determine who we would nominate as our episcopal nominee. After hearing Rev. Britton’s journey into ministry, we spent time discussing his gifts and graces with him. Administration and compassion were the words we kept hearing as we learned of his work in each of his appointments over the years. After a prayerful discussion without him to discern where we believed God was leading us, we voted by secret ballot on the nomination of Rev. Britton. A unanimous vote on the very first ballot made it very clear to us that Rev. Britton would be our selection. The delegation commends to you Rev. Britton and asks that you pray for him and his family as they begin this journey,” expressed David Stotts, vice chair of the 2020 Mississippi Conference Delegation.
“I am honored and humbled to be endorsed by the Mississippi Delegation as an episcopal candidate. Their support and words of encouragement have been overwhelming. It is also an honor to serve as the leader of the delegation. We seek your prayers and support as we prepare for the important work ahead at the 2020 General Conference and Southeastern Jurisdiction Conference,” said Britton.
Bishops are elected by the jurisdictional conferences in the United States. The Mississippi Conference is in the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ). The Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference will meet July 15-17, 2020 at Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center in Lake Junaluska, North Carolina.
